LOCATION OF POSITIONS (4) TO BE FILLED: DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION, MORGAN COUNTY

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, is responsible for correctional counseling work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: *This is the working level class in the Correctional Counselor sub-series. An employee in this class is responsible for counseling juvenile and adult inmates. This class is flexibly staffed with and differs from Correctional Counselor 1 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for entry level work. This class differs from Correctional Counselor 3 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for lead level work.
 
 Examples of Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Performs a variety of casework services for assigned clientele; conducts regular counseling sessions with institutional residents; monitors clients' activities to keep aware of progress and adjustments in behavior.

2. Writes Individual Program Plans and recommends treatment for inmates in institutional settings.

3. Interviews and counsels inmates and students in institutions on goals and problems by reviewing files, writing social histories, and corresponding with families in individual, family and group counseling sessions.

4. Evaluates clients' progress and observes parole board hearings.

5. Transports clients to meetings and appointments as necessary.
 
6. Attends various staff meetings, conferences, and in-service training.

7. Prepares a variety of records and reports such as monthly statistical reports and activity reports.

 
 Minimum Qualifications: 
Education and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and experience equivalent to one year of full-time responsible professional counseling work, or professional volunteer services coordination work with the Tennessee Department of Correction; qualifying full-time professional experience or paraprofessional counseling with inmates in a correctional institution may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of four years; additional graduate coursework in a social or behavioral science may be substituted for the required experience, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of one year.

 
 Necessary Special Qualifications/Examination Method: 
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A valid vehicle operator’s license may be required for employment in some positions.
