Looking at the international influence of the photography festival through the "marriage" of Pingyao and Provins
The Pingyao International Photography Festival has found a perfect match between Pingyao, China and Provins, France, two world-renowned ancient cities, who will forge a sister relationship this October.
For its well-preserved architectural style of the Han ethnic people prevailing in the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), the ancient city of Pingyao was listed in 1997 by Unesco as a World Heritage site, while Provins, a small town in France, was in 2001 inscribed also on the World Heritage list, for the fact that it has witnessed the drastic changes taking place in Europe in the 11th and 13th centuries, and that it has preserved its original urban fabric and its authenticity and is representative of a period that saw the beginning of economic and cultural exchange within Europe.
The two ancient towns, one lying in the mysterious East, the other in romantic Europe, like a proud pair of sisters, are showing to the world the continuous lines of human civilization.
But for the Pingyao International Photography Festival, the two citadel cities, laden similarly with so many historical memories and filled with so much detritus of civilization, might have remained strangers to each other; it would be indeed a great pity if they were now still tucked away in its own little-known corner of the world.
